Shared railway heritage links Darlington and Tangshan during S&DR200 celebrations
As the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) celebrates its 200th anniversary, a shared railway heritage is helping to forge closer connections between the market town of Darlington and the major industrial city Tangshan in northern China.
In 1825, the S&DR was launched and became the world’s first public passenger railway and only 56 years later China’s first commercial railway the Tangxu Line opened near Tangshan in Hebei Province. Despite the 5,000 miles that separated them, the two railways bore striking similarities.
Coventry and Baoding build closer ties through education exchange and shared history
A flourishing international relationship is developing between Coventry and Baoding, an industrial city in Hebei Province, northern China.

Coventry has long been internationally recognised as a City of Peace, shaped by its wartime experience and unfaltering commitment to reconciliation. These values now underpin a developing relationship with Baoding, which translates as “protecting the capital”. Situated about 150 km southwest of Beijing, it guards the capital's southern approach.
